Newly retired workaholic Roy Washburn is not ready for a life of leisure. On a trip to the mall with his wife, he finds a small metal cylinder with odd markings. One nudge of the cylinder's triangle-shaped pointer and Roy finds himself embarking on an exciting new adventure in the Time Stream. There he meets The Traveler, a tall, gangly being who shows Roy how to use the cylinder to visit other civilizations that co-exist on "his" Earth, each occupying a different, thin Time Slice. The Traveler solicits Roy's help in recovering an object invented by his murdered father and beyond his own reach. Roy is his last hope. At first it seems that the Traveler's wish might be easily granted. But after Roy's wife Emily becomes ill and his daughter's long-held resentments rise to the surface, he can no longer "travel" at a moment's notice. He also discovers the very real physical and mental risks involved in roaming the Time Stream. Despite the dangers, Roy is determined to help the Traveler. But he can't do it alone. Fortunately he has a loving wife and a core group of loyal friends. But first he must convince them--and his daughter--that he isn’t crazy ...

This is a pretty cool little book. Not too long. The story at the start is a bit hard to get through due to the nature of it being quite depressing, but the science fiction addition of the traveling through 'time slices' really kept me going. It made me think more of traveling through dimensions more than anything, and I think that was the point just using different termonalogy.

Once that began to move off and the story moved more into the plot of helping the 'alien' out with the request he had I found that I could not put the book down. From the moment the story wove back to where it started and then on I was so hooked and invested into it I HAD to know what was happening next.

I found that the characters were interesting and easy to 'feel' as real. Some parts were a bit silly but really it added to the comedy that no doubt were the intention of the author.

It was kind of cool reading a story much like one we might simply overlook. some guy finds odd device that gives ability. He travels and takes on a quest, but not in the way most of these go... There was much more focus on home than the quest, which was a good change of pace for a story like this.

The blending of friendship was good and as well showed people not afraid to stand up and do what was right no matter the harm that may come to themselves.

Time Slice Kerry Downing 9781603818520 Books Reviews

It has been awhile since I have found a book I couldn't wait to read. I loved this book. I thought the author did a great job of handling the disbelief and awe anyone would have when finding an amazing device that allows you to travel to different time slices. I loved the 'worlds' and the new Beings - including one named Rah that he becomes friends with. This author reminds me of Sawyer, with some sci-fi but also great relationship development. I strongly recommend.
Seriously, there is absolutely no character development in the story. Not that much plot either. Roy was a bad father. Ann hates her father because he was a bad father. That's about as deep as we get. As for the story, it was an interesting "Sliders"-like concept, but the author spent no time at all investigating it. None. No idea what's happening in these other slices or why. There's a factory and some leaping lizards. I just kept waiting for something to HAPPEN! It never did. Got this as a free book on Bookbub. It was almost worth it.
I admit, I could not finish this book. I tried, honest. But there was just nothing to hook me into this story. There seems to be a lot of potential here, but it never quite develops. Perhaps if the author had focused more on the dimension shifting and less on Roy, Emily, and Ann, I would have liked it more. It seemed like every time the dimension-shifting plot was starting to develop, the story turned back to Emily's illness and Ann's dislike of her father. (I get the feeling those were added to create character depth. Instead, they took away from what has the potential to be a good story.)
I've been downloading free books all summer. I have mostly downloaded mysteries, suspense and sci-fi/fantasy books. Time Slice is one of the better written and edited books I've read. For comparison, I've completed reading around 40 books, plus two that I simply could not finish because they were so poorly written and edited.

I mostly enjoyed this book. The ending is a bit too pat, but most of the characters are fairly well developed. The portrayal of kind loving relationships, and those that are less so rings true to the human experience. I was pleased that the novel was NOT filled with gratuitous, graphic sex. I found the descrIptions of the technologies used in time travel quite rich, so that I could easily envision them in my minds eye.

I'll be looking for future books by this author. A thoroughly enjoyable read.
I really wanted to like this book but it just kept falling short. The writing is good but seems to be written for a more juvenile audience with all the "gosh darns" and such. Campy is how I would describe it. The characters lacked depth to me; everything was so surface but the ideas were fantastic and original for the well worn theme of time travel. I actually rolled my eyes at the relationship between the main character, Roy, and his daughter which I found ridiculous, surface, and unrealistic. The relationship between Roy and his wife was nicely developed. Though also campy at times, there were moments that rang very true and intuitive for an author who can't have possibly experienced them directly. The ending was completely rushed, as if the author had to pull an all nighter to get the book to the editor by morning. The risks Roy took were completely out of character with no explanation. The "whys" not well developed and tenuous. It seemed the author also tried to enter some new characters at the very end when there was no time to understand them and started throwing in everything and the kitchen sink to supplement the story. Very disappointing ending for what could have been.
